Η Αγία Φωτεινή έζησε στα χρόνια του Χριστού. Ήταν Σαμαρίτισσα στην καταγωγή και διέμενε στην πόλη Συχάρ όπου ζούσε ένα έκλυτο βίο. Ο τρόπος ζωής της ήταν γνωστός στους συμπολίτες της και για αυτόν την είχαν στιγματίσει.
